Week One (July 12th - July 18th)
This week marks just beyond the first month of being apart of this internship. That said I have definitely had trouble finding stories the past week. With that in mind I plan to attend the Newark City Council meeting (virtually) on Monday. The Council is set to have a first reading on some zoning amendments for a proposed mixed-use complex on Casho Mill Road that I feel like I could write a story around. I also pitched a story surrounding dogs a few weeks ago for the station's Mutt Mondays and Kyle recommended I focus on one that looks at why people adopt an older dog. I want to either find people who have older dogs in the area and/or an someone who works in dog adoptions to serve as an official source. Besides that I plan to ask Kyle and Greg if there are any stories I can write about focused around local events or any partnerships with the station and follow breaking news as it comes.
July 19th - July 25
This week in our weekly meeting Kyle and Greg were hoping to focus on content based around the upcoming Olympic Games. They were looking for either local content on Olympic Athletes or content based around local sports athletes. With an interest in sports I took it upon myself to write a story about some of the best Delaware athletes to finish their career's in the 2010's. I tried to focus on all sports, not just the most obvious and evident ones because there is room for all. This week my collaborative piece with my fellow intern Joy, also posted and featured a review of a trail, as well as some photography on my end. Kyle also sent me a press release that I hoped on later in the week about a local organization that helped foster children graduate high school.
July 26th - August 1
This week at our meeting Kyle and Greg first told us about an opportunity to work at Firefly this upcoming September with the creative team or media team. I still have not decided on whether I want to go through with it, but definitely had some interest. On top of that, the stories I mainly focused on were based around some stories Kyle was interested in going on the website, including one focused on events serving people food in Wilmington as well as a local event that would benefit charities and organizations surrounding police officers.
August 2 - August 6
Today was our last meeting of the internship with Kyle and Greg. It was tough to say goodbye because I felt like I had gotten into a groove at points with my writing. They told us all in all we all did well and if were ever looking for connections in the business to reach out. After the meeting I looked at some of the local radio stations with Beasley Media Group and found 97.5, a local sports show in Philadelphia, was apart of the company. I took a mental note of that because getting into radio is something that definitely peaks my interest, whether it be producing, on-air, etc. Overall, I felt the internship opened me up to things I was used to and new things as well. I attached a link to all my articles that came before the blog started. My favorite two by far are my story on Newark's continued Al Fresco and my coverage of the ban of arrest quotas in Wilmington. (Fun fact: I covered the meeting and wrote the story in a car driving to Connecticut).
